Student perspective: Ralphie's Cooking Basics

Take the stress out of getting involved

Getting involved doesn’t have to mean joining a club or group. Think about getting involved by attending events, programs or workshops. This week I visited Ralphie’s Cooking Basics.

Ralphie’s Cooking Basics

Ralphie’s Cooking Basics is a program offered by the Center for Student Involvement. These cooking classes offer a chance to learn a real-life skill and a chance to meet fellow Buffs.

From tacos to macarons to sushi, these cooking classes will show you the ropes. Each week there is a different food that you can learn how to make. All of the materials are provided! Not only do you get to make something delicious, you also get to eat it and what’s better than that? Don’t worry, a professional will be there to help guide you to making the perfect treat.

Why should you go?

Taking a break from studying to do something productive can help bring down stress levels. Meeting new people can also be a great way to give your mind a break. The cooking class allows students from all over campus to come together. Meeting new people can be fun and even bring you out of your comfort zone. Making friends with others who are having the same experiences as you can make the college transition even easier and bonding over food is a great way to do it. This is a fun way to get involved with very low commitment and it wont majorly impact your schedule.

Personal experience

When I went to the Cooking Basics class we made stuffed bell peppers. When I arrived there was a signup sheet that filled up quickly. After signing up we were led upstairs to the back of the Williams Village Dining Hall. Everything was already prepped and set up for us. We washed our hands then began the class. The chef led us through the steps on the recipe sheet in front of each person. He also talked to us about making this a vegetarian dish. I decided to put meat in mine and began cooking at my own stovetop. We were allowed to pick our desired veggies from a spread in front of us. The chef walked by a few times to make sure that everything was running smoothly. After finishing the prep, he put it in the oven for us. We all got drinks then sat back down at the tables. Everyone was so friendly and it was a nice way to meet new people. The food came out wonderful and I would definitely go again!

Logistics

The class is taught Thursdays from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in the Village Center Dining and Community Commons. Sign up begins at 5:15 p.m. at the base of the stairs. You must wear closed-toe shoes in order to participate. The seats for the class fill up quickly so be sure to arrive on time and ready to whip up something yummy!
