Human Resources - NCAR Fire resources for staff
March 27, 2022
Dear Colleagues,
We find ourselves once again in a situation where many members of our community may be experiencing anxiety, stress or even grief related to the NCAR fire. The wildfire started adjacent to the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in the south Boulder foothills on Saturday afternoon and forced the evacuation of thousands of residents.
It is not always apparent who might be struggling or in need of support in the aftermath of such events. I ask that you take care of yourself and connect with individuals who may need extra support. For supervisors, it is important that you check in with employees, make sure they are aware of available resources, and reaffirm they are part of a community that cares about them. Classes and campus operations will resume on Monday, March 28, as scheduled. I ask that supervisors be flexible if employees impacted by the NCAR fire need to take time away from work. Supervisors have the discretion to grant administrative leave to staff affected by the fire per the Local Emergency or Disaster Leave Guidance.
The Fire Resources page includes numerous resources to assist impacted students, faculty and staff. For staff, these resources include:
Individuals impacted by fires (e.g. evacuees) should review the Leave Options in Event of a Natural Disaster or Local Emergency Page.
Emotional wellbeing and support services provided by our Faculty and Staff Assistance Program and Office of Victim Assistance (OVA).
The Staff and Faculty Emergency Fund is available for those who are experiencing an emergency situation that creates a financial hardship.
Buff Pantry; open to support students, faculty, staff and community members experiencing food insecurity.

Merna Jacobsen, Interim Chief Human Resources Officer
