Overview
IAFS 3000-800: Special Topics in International Affairs - Global and Local Engagement is a three credit course which counts towards the Off-Campus Experience (OCE) requirement for the IAFS major. The course is generally offered each year during the spring semester. Students can review a sample syllabus from Spring 2023. Please note this syllabus is subject to change.
Why do the Global and Local Engagement Class?
- Fulfill the OCE requirement for the IAFS major without needing to study abroad.
- Gain practical experience working with an organization or issue you feel passionate about while fulfilling the OCE requirement and getting course credit.
- Learn about a wide range of issues from fellow IAFS students volunteering or working with organizations that have different focuses, all with an international or global perspective.
This course requires you to choose and complete at least 30 hours of a volunteer or service-learning project and complete a paper and presentation about the experience. During the semester you will discuss concepts such as service learning, global citizenship, leadership, and ethics. You will have the opportunity to learn about a wide range of issues within an international affairs context, like politics, race and ethnicity, refugees, women and LGBTQ+ issues, and international development and aid.
By the end of the course, you will gain valuable experience, make connections with amazing organizations, and learn more about your own interests and strengths. Students often continue to volunteer, intern, or gain employment with the organization they choose to work with for the semester.
