Dissertation Title: To Serve Themselves: The Institutional and Societal Roles of Shawnee Volunteering During the Nineteenth Century
Jae Tyler-Wolfe is a doctoral candidate studying nineteenth-century U.S. history at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio. Their primary research interests include race, gender, and identity, as well the relationship between Shawnees, U.S. institutions, and U.S. publics during the nineteenth century. To explore these topics, their dissertation project focuses on the actions of two companies of Shawnee volunteers in the decades before the Civil War, these volunteers' interactions with the federal government after their terms of service ended, and contemporary perceptions of soldiers and soldiering among Shawnee and non-Shawnee communities.
