Indian Country: Race and Environment in the Black Hills, 1851-1981
Dr. Stephen Hausmann is a historian of environmental and Native history in the American West. He earned his PhD in history from Temple University in 2019 and is currently an assistant professor of history at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul Minnesota. His current research focuses on the devastating 1972 Rapid City Flood and the environmental history of the Black Hills of South Dakota and the ongoing struggle between settlers and Indigenous people over the resources and meaning of the region. His book on the topic, tentatively titled Indian Country: An Environmental History of the Black Hills, is under contract with the University of Nebraska Press, and his writing can be found in the Washington Post, Rapid City Journal, Western Historical Quarterly, and elsewhere.
