This workshop is sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences' Office for Justice, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion.

This session will guide graduate fellows on effective networking strategies within STEM fields. Emphasis will be placed on establishing meaningful connections, leveraging academic conferences, and utilizing digital platforms. Participants will learn how to identify and approach potential mentors and collaborators, and how to sustain these professional relationships. Lunch provided; RSVP required.

The fellowship is awarded annually to a full-time (per the guidelines of the full-time program in which the student will be enrolled), first-year graduate student pursuing a Master’s degree program (or a doctoral degree program if it is the first graduate degree for the student) for work in the area of electrical engineering at an engineering school/program of recognized standing worldwide.

The Against the Grain Artistic Scholarship provides financial assistance to Asian American, and/or Pacific Islander students seeking an undergraduate or graduate degree. Students who are planning to receive a degree in visual or performing arts or communication are encouraged to apply.

Requirements

• Minimum 3.0 GPA
• Graduating high school senior, undergraduate or graduate student
• Seeking an associate, bachelor’s or graduate degree in visual or performing arts, mass communication, communication, film, theatre, fashion, graphic design, dance, photography, music or journalism
• Full-time student
• Attending a college or university in the U.S.
• U.S. citizen, U.S. national or permanent resident
• Asian and/or Pacific Islander American (minimum 25%)
• Participate in extracurricular activities and community service
• Demonstrate leadership
• The family of Against the Grain board members are not eligible to apply

Blanton S. Tolbert​, RNA Biochemist/Biophysicist at U Penn & HHMI VP of Science Leadership and Culture

Tolbert leads HHMI’s Center for the Advancement of Science Leadership and Culture where he directs a portfolio of current and new programs at the undergraduate and graduate level, an initiative to better equip HHMI scientists to provide culturally aware mentorship, a curriculum to grow scientists’ skills to maintain inclusive environments, and activities to develop strategic equity-centered initiatives and partnerships. Tolbert is also a Professor of Biochemistry and Biophysics at University of Pennsylvania. The research in the Tolbert group focuses on the biochemical mechanisms by which RNA viruses replicate within the cellular environment. His group leverages their fundamental understanding of the molecular biology of these viruses to identify novel targets for therapeutic intervention. The team has collaborated with colleagues to develop compounds with the potential to delay or halt the replication of SARS-CoV-2 and EV-A71.
