Feeling Homesick?
As the fall semester gets underway, it’s common to have feelings of homesickness. You may be adjusting to a new environment at CU Boulder, and these feelings are normal. Even though it might not be obvious, many students are experiencing the same thing.
Handling homesickness
While feeling homesick is not fun, it will get better over time as you get used to new surroundings, adjust to the expectations of a new semester and establish new friendships. Finding places on campus to call your own can help. Explore and find some favorite spots to get lunch, relax and study – places that are comfortable and feel like home to you.
Keep in touch with your family and friends from home. If you’re local, try to avoid visiting home during these first few weeks of the semester. Allow yourself time to get comfortable on campus and get to know new friends.
If you’re struggling to cope with homesickness, consider a walk-in appointment at Counseling & Psychiatric Services (CAPS). They can connect you to groups and workshops, like Feel Better Fast, which helps students learn coping strategies and feel more at ease in stressful situations.
