Asian Pacific American Bar Association

Minoru Yasui Scholarship

The Asian Pacific American Bar Association (APABA) Scholarship was established in honor of Minoru Yasui to annually recognize law students at schools in Colorado. Awards are based on demonstrated interest and commitment to educating and empowering minority communities, in particular, the Asian Pacific American community.

Minoru Yasui (1916-1986), a Colorado attorney, civil rights activist, and community leader for 30 years, is perhaps best known for his part in challenging the U.S. government’s actions surrounding the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II. He worked tirelessly to obtain justice from the internment both legislatively and through the courts, and was a party to the landmark case U.S. v. Korematsu. His writ of coram nobis and work in redress movement were instrumental in bringing about the vindication that he sought for himself and the Japanese-American community.

During his career in Colorado, Yasui was a founding member of the Board of the Urban League of Denver, a group dedicated to addressing the concerns of the African-American community; assisted in founding the Latin American Research and Service Agency; and helped organize Denver Native Americans United. He also served as the Executive Director of the Denver Commission of Community Relations, where he emphasized the issues affecting the African-American, Hispanic, Native American, and fast-growing Asian-American communities in Denver.

Class of 1994 Seumsap Ly Scholarship

Seumsap Ly was a 1994 Colorado Law graduate and a proud member of the Hmong community. As a child he left Laos for Thailand where he lived in a refugee camp. At age 10 he came to the United States with his parents and eight siblings. Eight years after arriving, Seumsap graduated from Westminster High as valedictorian. He was active in the Hmong community by teaching language and culture classes and volunteering with the Hmong American Association of Colorado. Seumsap founded the Hmong Student Association at CU. After graduating, he settled in Fresno, California, with his parents in the largest Hmong community in the United States. He sat for the California Bar Exam in July 1994, and planned to care for his parents and provide legal services to the Hmong people. Unfortunately, his life and career were both tragically cut short when he died in his sleep in November 1994. John A. Cross Memorial Scholarship

The John A. Cross Memorial Scholarship is a merit scholarship given annually to a deserving law student who demonstrates a high level of academic achievement. This scholarship was established by his family. His son, John Cross, Jr., provided this brief biographical sketch of his father:

“John A. Cross graduated from the University of Colorado Law School (in the Guggenheim building) in 1926, in a class of 29 students. Dean Fleming was the dean of the Law School at that time. John was later elected Larimer County Judge and held that office from 1929 to 1932. After that, he maintained a private law practice (Cross & Christensen) in Loveland, Colorado. John was always an iconoclast. As an undergraduate at the University of Colorado, he and three friends, who called themselves ‘The Four Horsemen,’ issued a campus-wide edict against the wearing of Rudolph Valentino trousers. Rudolph Valentino was the movie idol of the day, and the captain of the football team ignored the edict by wearing a pair of the proscribed trousers. The ‘Four Horsemen’ caught him one night, removed his trousers and threw them on top of a utility pole.”

Recipients of these awards do not need to write thank you letters.

Philip and Mildred Danielson Scholarship

The Philip and Mildred Danielson Scholarship was created to assist in the achievement of a diverse student body and awarded to a student who shows promise of success in the study of law and as a member of the legal profession.

Philip A. Danielson

In the summer of 1968, at the national convention of the Democratic Party of which he had been a lifelong member, Philip A. Danielson died. He was 41 years old.

He was an energetic and passionate man. In his career, he was intensely involved in a number of public endeavors. Among these was support for the University of Colorado, from which he graduated and for which he served as a regent from 1960 to 1966. He was a firm, lifelong advocate of the social value of public higher education, and its availability to all citizens.

He had a lifetime of commitment to politics. He served the Democratic Party as a candidate, as an office holder, and as a party official. He was a firm advocate of the use of the democratic process to achieve a better and more just society, and a strong believer in the idea of progress.

In addition, he had a sincere, deep, and passionate commitment to the ideal of racial justice and equality. He would not tolerate for a moment the slightest degree of ethnic or racial inequity or insult, and of all the causes he held dear, none was as important to him as the cause of equal rights and equal justice for all citizens regardless of race or creed.

Looking back to the years prior to 1968, it was difficult indeed for him to reconcile his lifetime of work within the Democratic Party with that Party’s systematic refusal to allow equal participation in its process to members of minority races. Specifically, the Party’s long practice of accepting at its national conventions segregated southern delegations
consisting principally of those same white southern officials who denied black citizens the right to vote was for him a burning injustice.

In 1968, a year of immense political trauma, he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. He was deeply honored to be chosen to present to the Party’s Credentials Committee the case for seating the integrated Mississippi Freedom Democratic Delegation in preference to the undemocratically selected white regular Democratic slate. He presented his argument to the Credentials Committee, which voted for the first time to accept the Freedom Democratic challenge and seat a broadly representative delegation of people of all races.

This must have been one of the proudest moments of his life. Exactly what he felt, we will never know, as he died of a heart attack in the hotel lobby a few minutes later.

His goals included making public higher education available to everyone, and he was committed to opening the legal profession, of which he was very proud, to minority citizens who had been almost absent from its ranks. He had a passion for racial equality and the dismantling of all of the shameful barriers which stand between our minority citizens and full equality and participation in the political and economic life of our society.

Mildred Danielson

From 1970-1981, Milly worked at Colorado Law School as Assistant Director of Minority Programs. At a time when very few African Americans, Latinos, Native Americans, or other minorities, and very few women were attending law school, her job was to work to try to diversify the student body by ensuring that deserving candidates knew that the Law School wanted them, would accept them, and would help them succeed. She recruited students, found housing for students, found tutors for students, helped students with the personal stresses of law school, and in general was there as a supporter and friend for the generation of students that opened the doors of the Law School to all.

David H. Getches Scholarship

The David H. Getches Scholarship, established in 2011 in honor of David’s commitment and service to the Law School as Dean from 2003-2011, is awarded to students on the basis of criteria set each year by the Dean.

Biography of David H. Getches

David Getches served the Law School as Dean from 2003-2011.  In his more than two decades at the Law School, Professor Getches became a national authority on natural resources and Indian law issues. His academic interests were prompted by his experience; prior to joining the faculty of Colorado Law School in 1979, he was the founding Executive Director of the Boulder-based Native American Rights Fund and spent several years in private practice.

Dean Getches had a prolific academic career. He wrote casebooks, as well as books intended for a more general audience, and published numerous articles and book chapters, including some written in Spanish and French. He took two leaves from the University of Colorado, first to serve as the executive director of the Colorado Department of Natural Resources from 1983 to 1987, and then to serve as a special consultant to the Secretary of the Interior in 1996.

Dean Getches’s later research focused on a variety of topics, including the United States Supreme Court's Indian law decision-making, changing patterns of governance in water law, the law of the Colorado River, and indigenous and water law issues in Latin America.

At the time of his untimely passing in July of 2011, Getches was working on finding solutions to the ecological problems of the Colorado River Delta in Mexico, grazing issues in the Colorado Plateau, acquisitions of rights to instream flows, and on federal legislation supporting tribal governance of Indian reservations. He intended to continue developing his work in the area of international water and indigenous issues, and had hoped to write more publications for non-academic audiences.

Herrick and Mary Lidstone Business Law

The scholarship is given to students who have demonstrated academic success and who take one business-related course each semester during their second and third years. Courses may include those focusing on corporations, unincorporated entities, securities law, accounting for lawyers, tax, labor and employment law, or other business-related subjects. Preference will be given to honorably discharged military veterans or those who are active members of the United States Military.

Biography of Herrick K. Lidstone, Jr.

When Herrick Lidstone graduated from the Law School in 1978, his view of his future practice area was natural resources law. After joining a law firm and practicing in the oil and gas, mining, and water law areas, Herrick was slowly moved into transactional law, including business entities, financing, and tax. Through the rest of his career, Herrick focused on transactional law but always enjoyed natural resources when it was a component of his transactional practice. Nothing that Herrick accomplished would have been successful without the love and support of his wife and still bride, Mary Lynne. Their married life started two weeks after the 1978 bar exam. The practice of law is tough on relationships - but those times are worth surviving and thribing.

Herrick K. Lidstone, Jr. was awarded the University of Colorado Law School Alumni Award for Distinguished Achievement - Private Practice in 2022.

Biography of James R. McBride

James Robert McBride was a chemical engineer, food and wine connoisseur and patent attorney. Jim was born in Gary, Indiana, and was a valedictorian at East Gary Edison High School. He started college, but was too poor to stay and enlisted in the Army. After serving in Germany from 1954 to 1956, he returned to the U.S. and received a chemical engineering degree from Purdue University in 1959. He received his law degree from the University of Colorado Law School in 1964.

He specialized in intellectual property law and worked for most of his career with the Chicago firm of Fitch, Even, Tabin & Flannery. In 1975 he wrote the original patent for the isolation of somatostatin, a hormone that regulates the release of growth hormone, for which its researchers won a share of the Nobel Prize in 1977. During his career he and his wife Toni owned a home in Yorktown Heights, NY, at which time Jim worked with IBM briefly and also with the medical technology company Becton, Dickinson and Co. for seven years.

Jim, as he was known by his family and friends, loved life. He was an avid reader and a restaurant aficionado and enjoyed cooking, sailing and listening to classical music. He and Toni were world travelers and skied each winter in Winter Park where they owned a condominium.

Jim and Toni retired to Savannah in 1999. There, he devoted an entire room to his wine collection, keeping thousands of bottles on reserve for special occasions.

Victor Quinn Scholarship

The Victor Quinn Scholarship is awarded to a student who has financial need and demonstrates professionalism in an essay addressing this quality. The scholarship was given by alumna Ms. Florence Phillips (’84) in honor of her former partner, Victor Quinn (’55), of the law firm Cockrell, Quinn & Creighton. Florence Phillips, former partner of Cockrell, Quinn & Creighton, credits most of her professional growth to her former partner, and describes her admiration for Victor Quinn in her letter establishing this scholarship:

“Vic is an incredibly nice man, and an incredibly good lawyer, teacher and mentor. Vic, who graduated from CU in 1955, is always able to focus on the important issues, avoid personalities and exemplify a level of professionalism to which all lawyers should strive to attain. When any of the lawyers in the firm sought Vic’s assistance, he would guide us through the logic and ethics of the situation to a resolution of the problem. Vic’s kind, guiding hand also served well during some of the more contentious moments of a few of our partnership meetings. Vic has a far greater capacity for accepting another lawyer’s foibles (lawyers seem to have more than most people) than any other lawyer I know. Indeed, Vic is one of the most charitable people I have ever met. In addition to being an exceedingly kind man, Vic is also most generous. Because of his excellent legal skills and his kind manner, Victor has served as general counsel for many of his clients, including the University of Denver and the Iliff School of Theology.

I miss working with Vic. Since leaving the firm, I have been pondering how I might demonstrate my respect, admiration and fondness for him. Because Victor is a wonderful role model for all lawyers, I have decided to establish a scholarship at the Law School in Victor’s name in order to encourage new lawyers to follow in Victor’s footsteps.”

William E. and Maxine Rentfro Law Scholarship

The William E. and Maxine Rentfro Law Scholarship is awarded to assist in the achievement of a diverse student body, by providing need-based scholarships to students committed to protecting and preserving human and civil rights and to improving the lot of those seeking full participation in the American dream.

Professor Michael Waggoner has provided an insightful and poignant reflection of William Rentfro for your benefit: When a mock election was conducted in Bill Rentfro’s grade school in a small town in Nebraska in 1932, there were a bunch of votes for Roosevelt, a bunch of votes for Hoover (Nebraska can be very Republican), and Bill’s vote for Norman Thomas, the Socialist candidate.

As a student at the University of Colorado in the early 1940’s, Bill worked for equal rights for blacks and fair procedures for all in a time when these causes had little social acceptance.

As a lawyer, he worked primarily for labor unions. For many years he had a joint appointment in the law school and in the Council for Labor Education And Research (CLEAR). CLEAR helped unions improve their management and their negotiation and drafting of labor-management agreements.

He worked with [later Justice] Byron White to protect and preserve human and civil rights regarding school integration, police/community relations, and better jail conditions in Denver in the 1950s.

He taught for many years at the law school. His courses were in the areas of labor law, negotiation and arbitration, and social and civil rights legislation. He always had a very good head for analysis, and he was the warm heart in an institution devoted to cool-headed analysis.

He was a major fundraiser for diversity students, passing the hat among Denver law firms to gather funds for scholarships. The law school had limited entertainment funds, so he would ask the faculty’s more enthusiastic supporters of affirmative action to bring food and drink to a reception for incoming diversity students.

For many years, he served as an arbitrator in labor relations matters. Although it was well known that his roots were in the labor movement, his fairness and balance allowed him to be selected by management representatives as well as by union stewards.

In short, Professor Emeritus William E. Rentfro had a career that should inspire our students who wish to practice in the public interest field.

Throughout Bill’s career as a practitioner, teacher and activist, his late wife Maxine was his steadfast companion. Both graduated from Kimball County High School in Kimball, Nebraska and both attended the University of Colorado during the very turbulent times of 1938-1942. They are the proud parents of Cindy Rentfro Rigot, and grandparents of Kevin and Paige Rigot. Sadly, Professor Rentfro passed away in 2009.

Additionally, preference will be given to those who have overcome significant challenges on their path to law school, as determined through the application process.

Vicente Sederberg LLP (“VS”) is a full-service law firm founded in 2010 with headquarters in Denver, Colorado. It has roots in the drug policy reform movement, and that activist spirit and commitment to advancing the common good have been central to its culture and identity for over a decade. VS remains deeply involved in advocacy and pro bono work that reflects the firm’s core values of compassion, justice, diversity, liberty, and social responsibility.

An esteemed colleague, Steve Fox was strongly principled, deeply empathic, and fiercely kind. He had a burning desire and uncanny ability to envision and realize positive change, both societally and in those closest to him, making him an incredible human being and a truly transformational leader. In his advocacy work, he found a way to fight simultaneously for several of his core values: promoting justice and compassion, advancing freedom and liberty, and nurturing and inspiring the human spirit. Humbly righteous, judiciously aggressive, and relentlessly ethical, he was a visionary committed to doing the right thing, doing it the right way, and doing whatever it takes to get it done.

This scholarship is being established by his friend and CU alumnus Christian Sederberg (’05), and his colleagues at Vicente Sederberg LLP and VS Strategies, to honor Steve’s commitment to creating positive change and to assist students in reaching their ultimate goals.

To show her you have taken the time to read about Mr. Shaha, please reference any part of his life that you particularly connect with or appreciate in your thank you letter to Carol.

Mr. Shaha's Obituary

Biography of Mr. Shaha

Bryan Shaha was born in 1941 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.  His father worked for Wilson Meat as a factory worker.  His mother worked in clerical or secretarial positions.  When Bryan was two years old, his dad was drafted into World War II and served in the infantry as an enlisted man, although he was older than most of the other men he served with.  Bryan graduated from US Grant High School and went to Central State University.  He excelled at sports and was a gym rat his entire life.

Bryan says he joined the Marine Corps to get out of Oklahoma.  He enlisted in 1965 and served in Viet Nam, flying A-6 jets for the Marine Corps.  He was a Captain at the time of his termination of service.  After his active military service, he enrolled in law school at the University of Colorado, graduating in 2 and ½ years.  At the time of his graduation, he was married and had son Colin.  He worked in law school as a waiter and his wife taught school.  In law school, Bryan was classmates with people who protested the war.  It was a strange time, but Bryan was friends with everyone.  In fact, Bryan had a nick name for just about everyone he met.  In law school, he participated in the clinical program and found the work for poor and minority clients to be his calling.  He graduated in December, 1971, but was considered a member of the class of ’72.

After law school, Bryan worked for Colorado Rural Legal Services in Greeley and Fort Collins, then for the Office of the Public Defender.  Bryan devoted his energy to representing poor and disadvantaged people.  He was in private practice for a few years and even then, managed to be appointed to defend a death penalty case.  At one time, Bryan had tried more death penalty cases than any other lawyer in Colorado.  None of his clients were ever executed.  He fought tirelessly to train other lawyers to defend death cases, especially in using the jury selection method he developed with David Wymore.

In 1996, Bryan was appointed the first director of the Office of the Alternate Defense Counsel, an assigned counsel program created by the State of Colorado.  He developed the program and recruited lawyers to take cases where the public defender had a conflict of interest.  He retired in 2006.  He died of colon cancer in 2007.  At the time of his death, Bryan was married to Carol Haller (Law, 1985), had two children, Colin and Meaghan, and one grandson, Beck.

Bryan came from modest circumstances.  He served his country and used the GI bill to pay for law school.  He used his talent, education and passion to help poor and disadvantaged people.  Bryan believed in the right of the accused to the best attorney in the courtroom, not just a lawyer.  He strove to be the best lawyer he could be.

Conrad and Cheryl Swanson Scholarship

The Conrad (Ted) and Cheryl Swanson Scholarship was established in 2015 by Conrad ('88) and Cheryl Swanson and is awarded to students who came to Colorado Law with prior work experience. Conrad (Ted) Swanson graduated from the University of Colorado Law School in 1988.  After having attended graduate school and worked for a few years he applied to law school.  He was married and had one child and another that was born during his first year of law school.  He had significant financial support from his family, nevertheless, the scholarship provided by CU made attending much easier and less stressful, and enabled him to graduate with no debt.  He has a profound sense of gratitude and hopes to repay, in some sense, a previous donors generosity. One of the most important things he learned was humility – distinguishing between what he  knows and what he do not know – and the desire and ability to look for and find an answer when he does not know it.

Prior to that, she held a number of management and legal positions for ExxonMobil, including chief attorney for the ExxonMobil Fuels Marketing Company. Prior to the merger between Exxon and Mobil, she was elected corporate secretary for Mobil Corporation, responsible for all Board of Directors, shareholder relations and stock listing issues.

She had the pleasure of helping to ring the opening bell at the NY Stock Exchange on the first day of trading XOM stock. She received her undergraduate degree at the University of Colorado and her JD at Colorado Law in 1980.
