Getting Started at CU Law

We are thrilled to have you on board! We hope this material will serve to assist you in getting set up in your position and ensure a smooth start to your employment at Colorado Law.

Before Your First Day

An IdentiKey consists of a CU Boulder login name and an IdentiKey password. It is the credential that uniquely identifies you as an employee. You will need to activate your IdentiKey so that you can obtain access to the MyCUInfo portal, email, and other critical systems and applications.

  • You will receive an email from the Office of Information Technology (OIT) when you IdentiKey is ready to be claimed.
     
  • You must activate your account in order to set your security questions and password.
     
  • You will need your unique employee ID number to activate your IdentiKey, which will be provided to you by Law IT. Please wait for the IT Welcome Packet before you try to activate your account or contact lawit@colorado.edu for help.

 

In accordance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 ("IRCA"), the University of Colorado Boulder must verify employment eligibility of each employee within the first three days of employment.Completion of Form I-9 is a two-step process and is a shared responsibility of both the employee and the university.

  • You will receive an email from Hire Right inviting you to complete Section #1 of the Form I-9. This section can be completed online.
     
  • Section #1 must be completed by the employee on or before the first day of employment.
     
  • Prepare to complete Section #2 within the first three days of employment. You will be required to visit one of the I-9 Offices on Campus and provide acceptable documents to complete the I-9.

You will be contacted by Allison Besant or   Karen Marchesi (Library Faculty only)  regarding the following items:

  1. Buff OneCard is your official university identification. Cards are designed for personal identification, access to the Law School after hours, other University buildings and rooms, some computing facilities on campus, borrowing privileges at the University library, and some events. This card also serves as a University provided bus and light rail service pass (including Local, Regional and Express service). As an employee of CU-Boulder, you are encouraged to ride the bus free of charge. Please see more information on the Parking and Transportation page. You will be asked to provide a photo of yourself (must follow U.S. Passport photo guidelines).
  2. Office Key - your key will be ordered as soon as your Buff OneCard is ready.
  3. Parking on Campus - All university employees must pay to park at the Law School. Preferred parking lots are 402 and 470. Payment options and fee schedule will be provided to you via email.

 

 

Your First 30 Days

As noted above, the Form I-9 is a two-step process. Once you complete the online portion through Hire Right, please plan to complete Section #2 within the first three days of employment.

  • In order to complete Form I-9 employees are required to present original documentation confirming identity and eligibility to work in the United States to to the I-9 office or authorized representative .
  • Review the list of Acceptabel Douments.
  • Plan to visit one of the I-9 offices in person to present your documents.The Regent Administrative Center is a short walk from the Law School building.
  • Section two is required to be completed in person, unless you reside out of state.

All Law employees must complete the below trainings within 30 days of employment via Skill-Soft:

  • Discrimination and Sexual Misconduct Training - required for ALL CU Employees every three years.  This training covers the policies that OIEC is responsible for to insure that the campus community is aware of prohibited conduct, options for reporting, the obligation to report policy-related concerns, resolution processes, what resources are available for support, how to offer support, and safe and effective strategies for addressing concerns or intervening as bystanders.
  • CU: Information Security and Privacy Awareness - This 30 minutes course will provide an overview of information security principles, as they apply to information at the University of Colorado. 

Regular faculty positions are paid monthly, on the last business day of the month, unless that day falls on a weekend or a holiday, in which case it is the last business Friday. Please complete the below paperwork as soon as possible, in order to receive your pay check in a timely manner. The deadline to enter or make any changes to your payroll information is the 17th of the month, changes made after the deadline will not affect current month's payroll.

* All academic Year contracts default to a 9 month paid contract and follow the below schedule:

  • Academic year salary will be paid from August 31 through May 31.
  • August will be pay a pro-rated gross amount of the annual year (AY) salary based on the August start date.
  • September through April will pay equal gross amounts of the annual (AY) salary.
  • May will be pay a pro-rated gross amount of the AY salary based on the May annual (AY) end date.

Some 9 month faculty are eligible to receive payment installments over a 12 month period. You will be contacted by Victoria Johnson if you are eligible. Please see the Faculty Payroll page for more information.

When your benefits eligible appointment begins, you must choose whether to enroll in or waive your offered benefits within 31 days of your hire date. Some benefits will enroll you automatically if you take no action, so please review all your options. You can easily waive or enroll in your benefits by using the benefits enrollment tool in your employee portal. Your elections will remain effective through the remainder of the plan year (July 1– June 30).

  • Review the Online Benefits Orientation and Resources
  • Enroll in or waive your health, vision, dental, and retirement benefits through your MyCUinfo Portal.
  • If your hire date is the first of the month, your coverage will begin immediately, regardless of the date you actually enroll. If your hire date is any other day than the first of the month, your coverage will be begin the first of the following month.
  • Most Academic Year contracts begin Mid-August, so benefits would start on September 1st.

CU Employees are automatically enrolled to receive real-time information about campus closures, extreme weather and other emergencies on your mobile device, but you can manage your preferences via the MyCUinfo Portal. Please visit  Campus Safety website and see the step-by-step instructions.

How to find information in an emergency:

  • On your mobile device—Watch for text or e-mail alerts in the case of a campus closure or if there is a threat to personal safety.
  • On the Web—Visit www.colorado.edu for detailed campus closure and emergency information and updates.
  • On the phone—Call the campus info line at 303-492-INFO (4636) for recorded information and updates relating to campus alerts.
  • By e-mail—Check your official university e-mail after an emergency for support and resource information.
  • On social media—Like CU-Boulder on Facebook and follow @cuboulder and @cuboulderalerts on Twitter.
