Matthew Cushing is the founding director of the Executive Education Program at Colorado Law, where he works with faculty to develop custom programs to serve the educational and development needs of executives, general counsel, entrepreneurs, and other individuals from across the globe. As the director of Colorado Law's Community Learning programs, Matt administers Colorado Law's Mini Law School program, an eight-week series that introduces non-lawyers to interesting legal issues that impact their day-to-day lives, and organizes the Colorado chapter of the Marshall-Brennan Constitutional Literacy Project, which partners Colorado Law students with public school teachers in underserved high schools to teach a course about the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
Matt also teaches courses on appellate advocacy and runs the Appellate Advocacy Practicum, which gives students the opportunity to draft briefs and appear for oral argument before state and federal appellate courts.
Prior to becoming the Director of Executive and Community Learning Programs at Colorado Law, Matt's practice focused on appellate advocacy and complex litigation in federal and state courts. While working at Jones Day and in the Ohio State Solicitor's office, Matt argued before the Supreme Court of Ohio, the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, and intermediate state appellate courts. He has been the primary author on numerous briefs before the United States Supreme Court, the Supreme Court of Ohio, and federal and state intermediate appellate courts across the country, including the United States Courts of Appeals for the Second, Sixth, and Tenth Circuits.
Matt graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Law School. During law school, he was an Arthur Littleton and H. Clayton Louderback Legal Writing Instructor and a member of the school's Supreme Court clinic, where he was involved in drafting briefs at both the certiorari and merits stage and preparing attorneys for argument in cases such as Padilla v. Kentucky, 559 U.S. 356 (2010), Abbott v. Abbott, 560 U.S. 1 (2010), Astrue v. Ratliff, 560 U.S. 586 (2010), Svete v. United States, No. 09-7576, City of Reno v. Conn, No. 09-1361, Yuma Anesthesia Medical Services LLC v. Fleming, No. 09-1146, and Robinson v. Lehman, No. 09-697.
After law school, Matt clerked for the Honorable Andrew J. Kleinfeld of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, and the Honorable Douglas P. Woodlock of the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts.
