My advice to students...

Its impossible to lead if you don't know where you're going.  Most critical starting point is the "Desired Endstate" - what do we want this organization/project/etc to look like when we're done.  If you can craft that in your mind, and communicate it effectively, half the battle is won.  The rest is follow-up.
