Ty Melton Headshot
Former President Melton Design Build. Industry Consultant

I have started and ran a successful remodeling company for 30 years and recently sold it to two employees. I have also been doing some coaching in the industry for other remodeling companies. I have been working with others on personal visioning, life planning, and building a company that allows a good work-life balance. Some of the books, ideas and tools I used included Great Game of Business, Five Dysfunctions of a team, Extreme Ownership, Good to Great, Ari Zingerman/Zing Train and others.

Melton Design Build is a 18 Million annual revenue, has 75 employees, a sales team of 7, 15 Architects and designers, HR, Estimating, Production department and an accounting team. We have around 80 Projects going at any time. The company is primarily run by a leadership team and a general manager I developed over the years with some of the tools and ideas mentioned above. We have a very low employee turnover rate and a very happy team.

My advice to students is...

My leadership style is to have a clear plan for what direction I would like to lead the team. Build the team and share with them the ultimate destination over what time frame and with what kind of rules, and then work with the team about what ideas and suggestions they would like to use to try and succeed.
