Chip Application Guide

Hi! Chip here! Throughout the application, click on me to get some extra information about the housing process! This isn’t my first rodeo, so I’m happy to help you while you get ready to be a Buff!
Why do I need to share information about my parents or guardians?
Some of the information shared with University Housing is protected by the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act, otherwise known as FERPA. If students want their parents or guardians to have access to this info, we need to know! Parents: If you ever call University Housing and want to talk about your student, be sure to have their Student ID handy!
Some things to remember!
As you are filling this out, think about your weekends and breaks, as your schedule will drastically change when you come to CU! So, for example, are you naturally a night owl, or an early riser? It will also be important to consider being honest in how you answer these questions, as we want to help you find the best roommate match possible. Are you someone who has specific spaces for all of their belongings, or do you like to let things collect and spread out? It’s important for us to know, as you might not have shared a space like this with another person before, and your honest answers help us set you up for success!
Some students may have assistance animals, and if you have allergies, you might want to preference that you don’t get placed with a student who has one. Remember, assistance animals can be anything and it is harder to move students after assignments have been made, so if your allergies are severe, we recommend you submit an accommodation request with Disability Services once you finish this application for the greatest support.
Wonder why these are the only questions we ask?
By law, CU does not ask questions regarding identity and/or protected classes. Our interest is in matching students based on how they live and share spaces with others. So, if you are looking for someone with similar values or beliefs, we recommend using our roommate selection process in June/July where you can chat with potential roommates and/or include that information in your profile.
What should I do if have allergies to animals?
Some students may have assistance animals, and if you have allergies, you might want to preference that you don’t get placed with a student who has one. Why am I only seeing Reed hall?
We can only offer Break Housing in Reed hall. If you aren’t interested in living in Reed hall, or you don’t require break housing, click on the Break Housing button on the left navigation bar and adjust your preferences.
If you don’t have someone in mind to room with, don’t panic!
Most students go through option 2 - the roommate selection process, or option 3, which is letting University Housing assign you a roommate. Option 3 uses the lifestyle preference questions you answered earlier to find the best match. Both are great ways to find people with similar interests and living preferences!
Why am I only seeing 6 Traditional halls?
By selecting the mutual roommate request option, you are choosing to prioritize your roommate over your living experience. As such, you are only eligible for the specific halls that we’ve allocated to accommodate this process. If you would like to prioritize your hall or living experience selection instead, you’re welcome to return to the previous page and choose to not have a mutual roommate request. If you choose preferences other than the ones offered here, your roommate will no longer be considered.
Want to participate in the roommate selection process? You should select a Double with Community Bath as your roomtype!
Only students in these room types will be able to participate in the roommate selection process later this summer. 90% of the rooms in our residence halls are doubles with community bath, so they have the largest pool of potential roommates! Some of our specialty room types may only have one or two rooms in a building, so there are not enough students to pick from. But don’t worry, we do our best to match roommates we think will be a good fit!
What are the dining options?
There are lots of dining options at CU! I’m personally a fan of the Williams Village dining center, but I also like to stock the microfridge that is provided in my room with food from the Grab-And-Go in the C4C or Farrand! Busy Buffs often grab a bite to eat for later.
Are roommates selected based on gender?
Roommates are matched based on the gender identity you select, but all of our halls are co-ed. We do have some specific gender-inclusive options as well. If you are interested in those, or our very limited single gender areas, you should email University Housing, or select multiple gender identities in your roommate gender preferences.
What if I don’t want to participate in a RAP, but the hall I want to live in does not have any other options?
If you are applying to live in a hall that only offers a RAP or LLC experience, you are going to be required to participate in that program. That may include things like mandatory classes and extracurricular activities. If you are not interested in RAPs or LLCs, you should stick to options that say “Traditional.” You can make adjustments to your preferences until the priority deadline.
