SASC Congratulates Graduates for 2017

The Student Academic Success Center hosted a graduation reception for its 2017 graduates on Friday, April 28, 2017. Students from the McNeill Academic Program, TRiO Student Support Services Program, and First Nations Scholars Program were recognized at a reception held in the Abrams Lounge at the Center for Community on campus. Friends and family were invited to help celebrate the academic success of this years graduates. Ruby Baca, Political Science and History double major, was the graduate speaker for the event. As a First Generation and McNeill Scholar, Ruby has been an active member of the SASC Student Advisory Board and as a Peer Mentor for the McNeill Academic Program. Avilene Rodriguez, CU Alumnus from the graduating class of 2011, was invited as the Alumni Speaker. Avilene is the School Readiness Director for the City of Denver under Mayor Michael Hancocks’s Office. Shawnta’ Jones, a junior at CU Boulder majoring in Sociology with double minors in Ethnic Studies and Education, was the Master of Ceremonies. Shawnta’ received three Native American Scholarships from CU Boulder: the White Antelope Memorial Scholarship, First Nations Scholarship, and the Catherine and George Favareau Fund. Breana McCullough, a junior majoring in Music & Women and Gender Studies, provided lovely viola music as guests arrived, and Dr. Corinna Rohsé, the Director for Student Academic Success Center, led the Graduate Recognition for the ceremony. Dr. Rohsé thanked the parents for entrusting their students to the programs, and echoed the sentiments spoken by Ahmed Elsayed, Integrated Physiology major, that being a member of these communities felt more like family, rather than just a place to go to school. Each graduate was invited to receive a sash from their respective programs, and shared some thoughts with the audience about their experiences while at CU Boulder.
