The Colorado Shared Instrumentation in Nanofabrication and Characterization (COSINC) research facility is calling for new proposals that would be enabled by their equipment and staff now through April 30.

The program aims to encourage new and innovative projects. Each selected effort will receive up to $500 of equivalent instrument time and 100 hours of assisted usage fee ($3,500 equivalent, some restrictions apply), for a period of six months. A total of three projects will be competitively selected from applications in any academic discipline or research area.

“One of our key goals as a facility is to promote interdisciplinary research and offer hands-on training with the various material characterization techniques we provide,” said COSINC Director Aju Jugessur. “This program certainly fits those priorities, and I am excited to see the work that comes out of it."

COSINC is a multidisciplinary core research facility and service center within the College of Engineering and Applied Science. Located primarily on east campus, the open facility offers a common platform for the convergence of multiple scientific and engineering disciplines and facilitates collaboration. Past projects funded through this opportunity came from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, the Department of Physics and the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology among others.

The call for proposals has several specific requirements. Principle investigators must be faculty and/or staff (including external academic and local companies), projects must be novel and innovative, and they must include a collaboration component with COSINC staff.

Important dates include:

  • Application submission deadline: April 30 (by noon)
  • Announcement of the selected projects: May 31
  • Start date of the selected projects: July 1
  • End date of the selected projects: Dec. 31
