Student Processes & Administrative Concerns

Does MENV begin in Augmester or Fall?

Students beginning the MENV program in the newest cohort (2022) will start classes in the Fall semester, not Augmester.  The first day of class will be Monday, August 22, 2022 but you should also plan to attend the Mandatory MENV New Student Orientation on Thursday, August 18 & Friday, August 19, 2022. Please see your April 19 communication for more details.

What if I do not have a local permanent address, can I still complete the pre-registration items?

Yes, you can use your current address on the pre-registration step.

Where can I find my Student ID?

The CU Student ID number is listed on the main page of the Application Status Portal.

Is the MENV New Student Orientation mandatory?

Yes!  The MENV New Student Orientation is required for all new MENV students and will take place in person on Thursday, August 18 and Friday, August 19.  More details are to come, but mark your calendars now!

Update 8.9.22: The NSO Agenda is now available here!

What is the process to withdraw from a class?

You can find these processes on the Office of the Registrar website here: Drop a Class | Office of the Registrar | University of Colorado Boulder

If you are dropping a "special sessions" course, pay attention to the deadlines as they will be different than a course within the regular term.

Course and Career Goal Advising

Course Registration Issues (Technical)

Who is my advisor?

Throughout your time as an MENV student you may want to meet with an Academic Advisor, an Administrative Advisor, a Career Advisor, etc. Please refer to the MENV Student Advising Center for information on who to contact for what.

For fall 2022 advising updates, please see FAQ "Who should I contact about course planning and registration?"

Where do I look for my specialization requirements and options?
Can I take electives outside of MENV?

MENV encourages students to take courses across all MENV specializations. Alternatively, MENV encourages students to take courses across the campus community that align with career goals.

Dates & Calendars

How do I know which dates I am supposed to attend CIL 1 this fall?

There are four sections of Capstone Innovation Lab 1 (CIL) available this fall. The section in which you enrolled will determine when the course begins and how often you will meet. The online scheduling system will likely show this course on your schedule every week, so please see below and add these meeting dates to your personal calendars.

ENVM 6001-001: M 9:00am - 10:40am beginning 8/22 and meets every other week
ENVM 6001-002: W 9:00am - 10:40am beginning 8/24 and meets every other week
ENVM 6001-003: M 9:00am - 10:40am beginning 8/29 and meets every other week
ENVM 6001-004: W 9:00am - 10:40am beginning 8/31 and meets every other week

Where can I find the academic calendar(s)?

The Office of the Registrar manages the CU Boulder academic calendars here. On this page you will find add/drop dates, withdraw deadlines, etc. You will also find pdf versions of these calendars on this website, including Fall 2022.

For the majority of courses, MENV follows the main campus academic calendar.  However, you may occasionally take a course which follows the "special sessions" calendar, such as an 8-week or 5-week course.  Please pay attention to your course calendar as special sessions courses generally have earlier add/drop deadlines.

When are the holiday breaks for students?

You can find all calendar details on the Office of the Registrar website: Academic Calendar | Office of the Registrar | University of Colorado Boulder

If you prefer, you can download the Fall 2022 and Spring 2022 Academic Calendar pdf versions on the right side of this page.

Billing and Financial Aid

Where can I locate the MENV tuition fees?

The tuition fees are maintained by Bursar's Office and outlined based on your residency: Colorado Resident or Nonresident/International.  As you look through this information, please be aware that MENV is listed as "Environment" on the Fall 2022 Tuition & Fee Rate sheets and you'll want to make sure you are looking at the sheets for Professional Graduate Students.

What financial aid options are available and how do I apply?

First, we recommend that you read through the Financial Aid information provided here on the Admitted Students website which explains the FAFSA process and offers links to additional funding opportunities. We also highly encourage you to set up an appointment with a Financial Aid Advisor to discuss your specific situation and needs.

The term "financial aid" can describe various forms of aid such as grants, scholarships, etc.  Below are some guidelines for federal loans specifically.

Financial Aid Loan Considerations:
All graduate students (enrolled at least half time) who submit a FAFSA are eligible for the Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan. While reading the information below, keep in mind that MENV requires students to be enrolled in a five credit hour Capstone course during the summer.

  • Students should be aware that “Academic Year 2022-23” is defined as Fall 2022, Spring 2023, and Summer 2023. So if a student receives an offer of $20500 in Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loans for the upcoming year and accepts all of that funding in the Fall 2022 and Spring 2023 terms, then there will be no remaining eligibility for that specific loan offered during the Summer 2023 term. Graduate students may be eligible, however, to apply for an additional Graduate PLUS Loan or private student loan during the summer.
  • The Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan, by default, will be split in half between the fall and spring semesters after it is accepted. However, per a student’s individual request (made to the Financial Aid Office), this offer can be adjusted to a higher or lower amount for a given semester. Read more here about what to consider before accepting loans. Therefore, if a student is in need of aid for the summer term, one option would to take less than the yearly maximum of the Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan in the fall and spring terms so that any remaining eligibility can be offered during the summer.
  • To receive aid in the summer term specifically, there is a separate Summer Aid Application. The Summer Aid Application typically becomes available to submit through the Buff Portal when summer enrollment begins and students are also sent a communication from the Office of Financial Aid when the application has opened.
When are my tuition fees due?

Here are the tuition due dates by term, located on the Bursar Office website. In addition, this webpage provides good information about when to expect bills to show up in your student portal as well as when financial aid is applied.

Finally, if you are receiving financial aid, we highly recommend that you watch this video which explains how and when financial aid will apply to your bill.
