Henry Justice Ford

Henry Justice Ford (1860-1941), often written H. J. Ford in books, was a prolific illustrator in England particularly known for his illustrations of the color Fairy Book series. Ford studied at Repton School, Clare College, the Slade School of Fine Art, and the Bushey School of Art, until in 1892 he began exhibiting at the Royal Academy of Art. It was not these paintings, which were mainly of landscapes and historical subjects, that brought credit to the artist, and it was not until book illustrations, such as that of The Arabian Nights Entertainments, that he began to receive attention. It was Ford's contributions to Andrew Lang's collections of fairy tales that brought him into the public eye and are still remembered today as among his most captivating illustrations.
