CU Boulder Bike News - August 2023

Be sure to register your bike with the Environmental Center if you haven’t already. Bike registration is now through Bike Index, which allows police to track down your bike if it is stolen. It’s quick and easy to register online and then pick up your registration sticker from a campus bike station.

Act fast to be one of the first participants in our newest bike program. Free for students, this affordable program is available to all CU affiliates and is designed to let you try eBiking for two weeks so you can be confident that eBike ownership fits your lifestyle before you buy your very own bike. Come visit the bike station at its newest home which is just to the North of the CASE building and West of the CMCI Information Science building. We are offering all the same repair and registration services as before, plus have an outside charging outlet for eBike riders.

Due to reduced parking options near the Hellems construction site, the UMC bike shelter is now available to all CU affiliates by simply swiping your valid Buff OneCard (no pre-registration necessary). Please be sure to use a quality U-lock to secure your bike in this shelter and take off all easily-removed accessories.

Since 2003, the Buffalo Bicycle Classic has raised $3.4 million dollars in scholarships for CU Boulder students. Join us for an incredible ride on Sunday, Sept. 10 through Boulder County and help continue the legacy of the last 21 years supporting the College of Arts & Sciences BBC Scholarship Fund. With nine routes to choose from, the Buffalo Bicycle Classic has a ride for everyone. Find your favorite and register for the event today. CU faculty and staff members can use code CUSTAFF for $15 off and CU students can use the code CUSTUDENTS23 for $50 off registration (valid through 9/1/23). CU students and staff must use their colorado.edu email when registering for the event to receive the discount.

Bike sharing, provided by Boulder BCycle through a partnership with the Environmental Center, includes a large fleet of ready-to-ride electric bicycles located at 40 stations across Boulder, with 14 stations on or around campus. In contrast to bike rentals, each ride is kept short (under 60 minutes), and bikes are returned to any BCycle station when not in use rather than being kept and locked up. Boulder BCycles are available when you need them and they are a perfect complement to your feet, your car, your bus ride and even your personal bicycle! We know that connecting with bicyclists is only half the equation when it comes to safety; vehicle drivers are also responsible for safely sharing the road. After more than two years in development, Bicycle Colorado recently launched SHIFT Driving. This brand new online driving education course focuses on filling the knowledge gaps seen in existing driving education, specifically on sharing the road safely with bicyclists and pedestrians. It’s a free course, available to all Colorado riders and drivers! Learn more about SHIFT driving.

As the number of campus residents and visitors grows and vehicle traffic/parking becomes more challenging, the use of bicycles, skateboards, and walking on campus is highly encouraged. Bicycle, skateboard, and pedestrian regulations are in place to maintain a safe campus environment for our students, visitors, and employees.

Because 96% of bikes stolen on campus use a cable lock or no lock at all, it’s recommended you use a high quality U-lock to keep your bike safe. Make sure the lock goes through the frame of your bike, and not just the front wheel. Thieves can easily remove a front wheel and take the rest of your bike. If you don’t have a U-lock, pick up one for free when you trade in your cable lock at one of the bike stations during normal business hours.
