R+PM Group molecular engineering of liquid crystal elastomers enhances thermal and optical response

March 2, 2021

R+PM Group Members Joselle and Tayler have reported in sequential reports that reducing the strength of intermolecular interactions in LCE enhance and sharpen the mechanical response of these materials. Take a look: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1002/adfm.202100564 and https://pubs.rsc.org/en/content/articlehtml/2021/py/d1py00028d .

Welcome to Boulder

Congratulations to Kyle Schlafmann - NDSEG Recipient!

May 5, 2020

Congratualations to Kyle Schlafmann in being selected for the National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowship. With this award, Kyle will continue to develop novel materials chemistries to retain hierarchical phases in liquid crystalline elastomers. Through the NDSEG, Kyle will collaborate with scientists from the Air Force Research Laboratory.

Congrats

Congratulations to Hayden Fowler - NSF GRF Recipient!

May 1, 2020

Hayden Fowler was selected for the highly competitive NSF Graduate Research Fellowship to continue their research of electromechanical responses in liquid crystalline elastomers with implications to soft robotics. https://www.research.gov/grfp/AwardeeList.do?method=loadAwardeeList . Hayden is the 2nd R+PM Group member to receive the NSF GRF.

Review in Advanced Materials - "Materials as Machines"

April 28, 2020

Check out Joselle and Brian's review that just appeared online in Advanced Materials . Enjoy the 48 pages of their hard work and effort! We feel that stimuli-responsive materials have tremendous potential in robotics implications.
