Since its genesis, LASP has been instrumental in positioning the university as a hub for the state’s aerospace and defense economy, the largest per capita in the nation. This leadership will continue this week, when representatives from LASP and other CU affiliates participate in the 38th annual Space Symposium.

The 16th annual New Venture Challenge (NVC) finals took place on April 12. This high-energy public event filled Boulder Theater on an unseasonably warm spring evening, where the audience watched five startup ventures compete for a portion of $100K in prize money to help them reach the next step in their success.

The Distinguished Research Lectureship is among the highest honors bestowed by the faculty upon a CU Boulder colleague. Each year, the Research & Innovation Office (RIO) requests nominations and a faculty review panel recommends one or more faculty members as recipients. The deadline for nominations is Monday, May 22, 2023. Nominations should be submitted online.

“Recognizing CU’s leadership in Quantum Information Science and Engineering, we are building on our world-class educational programs to establish a community of scholars to advance talent and future leaders in the quantum fields,” says Noah Finkelstein (Physics), faculty director of the Quantum Scholars program.

Space research first began at CU Boulder in 1948, when an Air Force research lab contracted with the Department of Physics to study the Sun by launching instruments mounted on surplus WWII rockets. Fast forward to the present, and LASP, which has grown to about 700 employees, is celebrating its 75th anniversary.

For the seventh time, NASA has selected the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) at the University of Colorado Boulder (CU Boulder) for the management and operations of the Earth Observing System Data and Information System (EOSDIS) Snow and Ice Distributed Active Archive Center (DAAC).

Miller will discuss a variety of topics including her work on indoor air quality in our homes and the lessons learned about airborne disease transmission during the COVID-19 pandemic that are still broadly applicable. “It will not be a technical lecture at all, and my hope is that people will leave with concrete ways to improve their health in relation to air pollution exposure,” she said.

Ten startups brought ideas to the stage, including how to live and garden more sustainably, how to deal with the downsides of social media, how to offer practical prosthetics for kids—and sustainable water filters and hydroponic produce for all. Eight teams took home a total of $20K to develop their ideas further.

CU Boulder researchers and inventors created a strong crop of 145 breakthrough technologies in 2022, with innovations in climate tech, biotechnology, quantum science, optics and aerospace, to name a few. Read more in Venture Partners at CU Boulder's 2022 Annual Report.

CU Boulder Provost Russell Moore today announced the appointment of Massimo Ruzzene to the position of vice chancellor for research and innovation and dean of the institutes, effective March 20.
