Team Overview

Founded in 2016, the CU Boulder Racing Team is an organization focused on various road racing competitions. Our goals are building a car to compete in the intercollegiate competition known as Formula SAE, and building endurance race cars to compete in the ChampCar Endurance Series and Lucky Dog Racing Series. The team is open to all levels and majors of students at the University of Colorado Boulder and provides its members with hands-on automotive experiences and problem solving skills, in addition to high-performance driving training. Our club welcomes everyone, with or without racing experience. The only thing we desire from our members is willingness to learn and enthusiasm for racing.

Formula SAE @ CU Boulder

Formula SAE (FSAE) is a student design competition endorsed by the Society of Automotive Engineers. Each year, students are challenged to design, build, and race a new race car while following a strict set of rules, encouraging students to create unique and innovative designs. There are over 400 University teams from 52 countries that come together in events around the world to prove that they have what it takes to produce a winning car.

Founded in 1981, it has become the most prestigious collegiate engineering design event. Formula SAE encourages students to apply their in-class education by designing a single seater race car, and marketing it as a potential product. The design must adhere to strict regulations set by SAE. The race car must be cost efficient, compete in a variety of dynamic events, and be presented to a board of judges. Formula SAE promotes learning, problem solving, hands-on experience, excellence, and provides with career opportunities. Racing has great significance to our members. It develops their engineering, social and professional skills.

Endurance Road Racing

The CU Boulder Racing Team’s Endurance Division designs, builds, and competes in endurance road racing championships including the ChampCar Endurance Series and the Lucky Dog Racing Series, with hopes of competing in the World Racing League in the near future.

Members collaborate to make the team’s vehicles race-ready and in compliance with the various rules and regulations of each series the team competes with. All members are encouraged to join and attend work weekly work meetings throughout the year. These work meetings provide a safe environment for students with any level of experience to be mentored and helped by others who may be more knowledgeable in an aspect of the vehicle and also encourages sharing and implementing of ideas in order to drive success. Additionally, members are welcomed to propose and take on projects on the vehicles in order to improve them.
