Rick Hess Talk

The CU Boulder School of Education will host a public dialogue with Rick Hess, director of education policy studies at the American Enterprise Institute, on Thursday, March 16 from 4-5:30 p.m. in the Aspen Room of the University Memorial Center.

Terrenda White, CU Boulder assistant professor of education, will lead the conversation with Hess, and Kevin Welner, CU Boulder professor and director of the National Education Policy Center, will moderate the Q&A session with attendees.

Building on 25 years of working in and around school reform, Hess will share knowledge inspired by his conversations with young, would-be reformers who are passionate about transforming education, which is also the source of inspiration for his recent book, “Letters to a Young Education Reformer." Hess writes that “reform is more a matter of how one thinks about school improvement than a recital of programs and policy proposals.”

An educator, political scientist and author, Hess studies K-12 and higher education issues. He is also the author of the popular Education Week blog, “Rick Hess Straight Up” and is a regular contributor to The Hill. A former high school social studies teacher, he teaches or has taught at the University of Virginia, the University of Pennsylvania, Georgetown University, Rice University, and Harvard University. He holds an MA and PhD in Government, as well as an MEd in Teaching and Curriculum from Harvard University.
