As a first-generation college student, I understand issues of accessibility and affordability. We want to make sure an education from CU Boulder is available to students from all walks of life.
Making that education more available is something we work on every day. I am pleased I will be announcing some solid results from that work to make college more affordable for all our students at my annual State of the Campus at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 17, in the Glenn Miller Ballroom. I hope you will join me in person or stream the event live.

I think it will be an exciting day as we demonstrate our work to fulfill our imperatives of developing tomorrow’s leaders, leading in innovation and impacting humanity.
Our work to increase affordability of a CU Boulder education is also reflected in programs we have put in place recently. We are in the second year of the CU Boulder Guarantee in which tuition and mandatory fees for entering resident freshmen are locked for four years, modeled after a similar program for non-resident students.
And we are in the debut year of important first-year student support programs. First-Year Seminars are small classes where students explore topics that help them discover the academic path that’s right for them. First-Year Interest Groups focus on a specialized academic topic so students are able to easily connect with other first-year students with similar interests while living on the same residence hall floor.
These programs exemplify our imperatives to lead, innovate and impact.
I should note we have an eventful month before us. Students and faculty will soon be immersed in midterms, and this weekend we are expecting 4,000 parents, siblings and future Buffs on our campus for Family Weekend.
We schedule the annual Faculty Convocation during Family Weekend so parents can meet faculty and see for themselves why they are world-class. At that convocation, we introduce and present faculty receiving tenure, promotion and achievement awards. The campus community is also invited to attend (1:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 6, Center for British & Irish Studies, Norlin Library fifth floor).
The month rounds out with Homecoming weekend, Oct. 26–29, where we are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Ralphie tradition and welcoming our alumni.
It’s an exciting month ahead, and I hope to see you at my State of the Campus speech on Oct. 17, where we will discuss what’s next for CU Boulder.
