Bridges to Prosperity CEO and College of Engineering and Applied Science alumna Avery Bang will give a free lecture at 7 p.m. on Sept. 7 in the Benson Earth Sciences Auditorium (BESC 185).

The speech, titled “Building Bridges to Prosperity: From Master’s Thesis to a Career,” is part of Engineers in Action’s annual Bridge Builder Conference, which runs Sept. 7-9 on the CU Boulder campus. Friday’s speech is open to the public, students, faculty and staff.

Bang is the president and CEO of Bridges to Prosperity, a Colorado nonprofit that builds pedestrian bridges in rural areas around the world. To date, the organization has built bridges in 22 countries and has formal programs in Latin America and Africa.

Bang has a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Iowa, a master’s degree in civil engineering from CU Boulder and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Oxford. She is a frequent speaker, giving presentations at TEDWomen 2018, the Engineering News-Record’s Women in Construction Conference and Engineers Without Borders, among many others. Her writing has been published in Acumen’s blog, ENR’s Future Tech blog and ASCE’s Structure magazine as a guest editorialist.

Engineers in Action works with indigenous professionals in Bolivia and Ecuador to improve the lives of thousands of people in need through sustainable community projects like the creation of sanitary and water systems, solar showers and pedestrian bridges. The conference is a three-day event focusing on connecting past, current and future bridge builders in the program together. Tracks will include sessions for past bridges to compare lessons learned as well as hands-on construction exercises for students.
