Colorado Set For NCAA Championships

March 09, 2022 | Track and Field

BOULDER – The University of Colorado track and field program sends six student-athletes to the 2022 NCAA Indoor Track and Field National Championships this Friday and Saturday in Birmingham, Ala.

The Buffs will send one male athlete, Eduardo Herrera, in the men's 3,000-meter run. The women's squad will send five: Rachel McArthur in the mile, Micaela Degenero in the mile, Madie Boreman in the mile, Emily Covert in the 5,000-meter run and Avery McMullen in the pentathlon. The five CU women competing at nationals in individual events is the most since 2001.

There are two Buffs ranked fifth in the NCAA entering this weekend's championships, Herrera and McMullen. The top seed in the men's 3,000-meter run is Yared Nugese of Notre Dame, the NCAA record holder at 7:38.13. Between Nugese and Herrera are a pair of NAU runners and a runner from Arkansas, but the entire field is separated by just seven seconds. With just the final, Herrera is poised at a run for a national title and will be in one of the fastest 3,000-meter fields ever assembled at the NCAA level.

McMullen enters the meet as the first CU women to compete in the pentathlon. She burst up the rankings with a school record back in February where she had a 200-point personal best. Since then McMullen has been focusing mostly on the hurdles, long jump and high jump, her three strongest events in the pentathlon. The NCAA leader is Florida's Anna Hall who scored 4,618 points earlier this season behind strong performances in the hurdles, long jump, high jump and 800-meter run.

Two other athletes are entered in the eighth-seed in their events, Emily Covert in the women's 5,000-meter run and Madie Boreman in the mile. For both this will be there first attempt at an indoor First Team All-America honor. Covert's time of 15:35.40 is just two seconds from the fourth-best mark in the NCAA this year. She and the rest of the field will be chasing BYU's Courtney Wayment who was the NCAA Cross Country Individual Champion this year.

Boreman will be joined by teammates Micaela DeGenero and Rachel McArthur who are seeded 11th and 14th in the mile. The top seed has run 4:30.94 this season with only four seconds separating the entire field. The three CU women will need to strategically work their way through the mile prelims that will probably be very strategic and fast. The top four from each of the two heats advance automatically with the next two fastest times advancing as well. All three of these women have experience in this with each competing at the last NCAA Outdoor National Championships.

Live coverage of the meet will be streamed on ESPN3 on Friday, Mar. 11 starting at 9 a.m, while streaming will begin Saturday at 9:30 a.m. The meet will be re-aired Sunday, Mar. 13 on ESPNU at 7:30 p.m. MT. Live results will be available here.
