When traumatic events occur in our community, our state, our nation or around the world, they may deeply affect us.

A tragic shooting unfolded Monday at the University of North Carolina’s Chapel Hill campus. Earlier in the week a racially-motivated shooting took place in a store in Jacksonville, Florida, where the suspect originally parked at the campus of Edward Waters University, a historically Black college.

We understand that gun-related incidents at other colleges and universities may cause concern among members of the CU Boulder community and impact each person differently.

The University of Colorado Boulder has resources and support in place to care for the campus community as events occur and individuals need support.

CU Boulder offers active harmer response trainings, an emergency notification system and other services to support students, faculty and staff, including tips on what to do when you notice behaviors of concern.

Last week, CU Boulder announced an expansion of its alert area to include the University Hill neighborhood, the Goss Grove neighborhood near Folsom Street and Canyon Boulevard, the Lower Chautauqua neighborhood and the residential area north of Williams Village called Baseline Sub.

The university also offers resources for navigating traumatic events and helping support others who may be impacted.

Faculty, who recently received reminders of support from CUPD, are advised to review academic instruction guidance for details on handling emergencies on campus.

CU Boulder researchers continuously study and offer insights on the prevention of gun violence, public health impacts, media coverage of mass shootings, warning signs of those who are struggling, resources and more. Learn more from a research perspective.
