A new exhibition at the CU Art Museum (CUAM) celebrates the beauty, diversity and strength of Black women in an immersive installation that brings together archival and artistic works. “We CU: A Visual Celebration of Black Womanhood, Presence, and Connectedness” draws from the University Libraries’ Rare and Distinctive Collections and the collections of the CUAM. The exhibition will be on view from Feb. 10 to July 13, 2024.

There will be an opening reception on Feb. 9, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at CUAM. The artists will give remarks at 5 p.m. and refreshments will be provided.

The exhibition is curated by Charlie Billingsley and Von Ross, the founders of the Museum for Black Girls, a pop-up museum that celebrates Black girl magic and culture. Billingsley and Ross are the inaugural artists-in-residence for a new program that connects CUAM and the University Libraries with socially engaged artists who create meaningful experiences for the campus and the public. The installation invites visitors to reflect on the profound impact Black women have had on shaping the concept of home, both as a physical space and as a metaphorical sanctuary of strength, resilience and cultural richness.

“I am deeply honored to serve as a beacon that acknowledges and celebrates the voices, achievements and stories of black women,” said Charlie Billingsly. “Creating a space to amplify these narratives is not just a responsibility but a heartfelt privilege. “Using my platform, I aim to share stories through the powerful lens of black women, inviting you into our homes, experiences and a celebration of profound beauty.”

“We CU” is meant to be a statement of acknowledgement, a message of recognition, and a space for sharing stories, encouraging empathy, embracing differences and promoting understanding.

“I wanted to create a moment and a space where the experiences and challenges faced by Black females, who often feel overlooked or marginalized in a society that tends to prioritize and favor fair-skinned individuals over darker skinned individuals, are valued”, said Von Ross. “This is a place where everyone can see the beauty in all of us. Where we can say, we see you.”

Billingly and Ross will also be available at a meet and greet during the CU Women’s Basketball home game against Oregon State on Feb. 11, 2024 at noon.
