CU-Boulder volunteers to help new students move in Aug. 20 and 22

Volunteers from a variety of campus groups will be available to help new students move their belongings into residence halls at the University of Colorado Boulder Aug. 20 and Aug. 22 as New Student Move-In begins. New students will move in Aug. 20 through Aug. 22 with the majority of freshmen moving in on Aug. 22.

The Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN, or MAVEN, mission to Mars will carry just over 1,100 haiku, along with thousands of names, on its journey to the red planet. The haiku were part of a contest, sponsored by the University of Colorado Boulder, asking the public to submit haiku poetry relating to NASA’s upcoming MAVEN mission to Mars.

Good year expected for viewing Perseid meteor shower Aug. 10-13, says CU planetarium director

University of Colorado Boulder astrophysicist Doug Duncan says this year's annual Perseid meteor shower and its natural nighttime light show will be particularly good as the display becomes visible over Colorado Aug. 10-13. "The moon will be nearly new, so it's an especially good time to see the meteor shower," said Duncan, director of CU-Boulder's Fiske Planetarium.

Animal Behavior Society meeting at CU-Boulder to feature public talks, activities, film festival

The 50th annual meeting of the international Animal Behavior Society to be held at the University of Colorado Boulder July 28-Aug. 2 will feature several public events, including lectures, scientific demonstrations and a film festival. The public lectures, to be held at the Glenn Miller Ballroom in the University Memorial Center, are part of the Applied Animal Behavior Public Day on Sunday, July 28, titled “Creating Quality Lives for Dogs and Cats Through the Science of Animal Behavior.”

NASA invites public to send names and messages to Mars

NASA is inviting members of the public to submit their names and a personal message online for a DVD to be carried aboard a spacecraft that will study the Martian upper atmosphere. Scheduled for launch in November, the DVD will be in NASA's Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) spacecraft. The DVD is part of the mission's Going to Mars Campaign coordinated at the University of Colorado Boulder's Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics.
