This month’s issue includes a look at Juneteenth, Pride Month, summer UndocuAlly sessions and the campus’s practice of inclusion resources.

The June 19 holiday, Juneteenth, is a time to recognize and celebrate the freedom and self-determination of African Americans and the end of the Civil War. It also provides an opportunity to deepen our understanding of the nation's collective history. For some, this may mean attending an event, listening to a podcast, reading, or having conversations with classmates, colleagues, family and friends.

Tina McDaniel, a retired human resource professional, passionate social justice advocate and diversity, equity and inclusion leader will lead an honest conversation about the remembrance and celebration of Juneteenth during a virtual event June 16.

This month’s issue includes a wrap-up of the IDEA Council’s first public forum and updates on Colorado’s new Juneteenth celebration, summer UndocuAlly sessions, the campus’s practice of inclusion and more.

Students at the Immigration Defense Clinic have represented more than 20 longtime university employees from El Salvador who have temporary protected status, which allows them to work. The clinic is helping them become permanent residents.

Rai Farrelly, a CU Boulder linguist, has been appointed to the board of directors for the TESOL International Organization. She was selected by her peers to help lead the organization, which is the foremost global authority for teaching English, with more than 11,000 members from 169 countries.

Council members will update the campus community about its work during the 2021–22 academic year, answer questions, and invite students, staff and faculty to join a discussion on the university’s next steps for promoting diversity, equity and inclusion across the campus.

Gov. Jared Polis signed a legislative bill into law, declaring Juneteenth a state holiday. The holiday recognizes the emancipation of enslaved African Americans and celebrates the self-determination of Black Americans. This year, the university will offer a floating personal observance day for all leave-eligible faculty and staff.

This month’s update highlights the IDEA Council, the Campus Culture Survey and next steps, the HHMI Inclusive Excellence Learning Community, the President’s DEI Award winners, a Human Resources workshop and our practice of inclusion.

The university is expanding the number of all-gender bathrooms available to students, faculty and staff and individuals and families who visit the CU Boulder campus.
