Analysts interested in dissolved carbon’s effect on wastewater disinfection byproducts, dissolved carbon’s abundance in aquatic ecosystems, or dissolved carbon’s impact on metal toxicity should consider quantifying dissolved carbon with the Sievers M5310C Total Organic Carbon (TOC) Analyzer. The Sievers M5310C TOC analyzer measures low level Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC), Total Dissolved Carbon (TDC) and Dissolved Inorganic Carbon (DIC) in surface water, groundwater, and drinking water. This instrument is not used for TOC analysis as samples must be filtered to prevent clogging of instrument tubing. The Sievers M5310 C TOC analyzer quantifies DOC by determining the difference between Total Dissolved Carbon (TDC) and Dissolved Inorganic Carbon (DIC) concentrations using a persulfate oxidation method and conductivity detector. Sample concentrations are determined by comparing the sample results to a set of potassium hydrogen phthalate (KHP) calibration standards. The DOC range for this instrument is ~80 µg/L - 10 mg/L. If dissolved carbon values are estimated to be >10mg/L, consider diluting samples or using the Shimadzu Total Organic Carbon/Total Nitrogen analyzer for analysis. If the analysts needs both DOC and total nitrogen data, the analyst should consider using the Shimadzu TOC/TN analyzer for analysis.
