Carbon

Analysts interested in dissolved carbon’s effects on wastewater disinfection byproducts, dissolved carbon’s abundance in aquatic ecosystems, or dissolved carbon’s impact on metal toxicity should consider quantifying dissolved carbon with the Shimadzu TOC-V Analyzer. The Shimadzu TOC-V/TN analyzer measures Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC), Total Dissolved Carbon (TDC), Dissolved Inorganic Carbon (DIC), and Total Dissolved Nitrogen in surface water, groundwater, and drinking water. While this instrument can be used for total carbon or total organic carbon analysis, the preferred analysis is DOC as filtering prevents clogging in tubes of the instrument and obtains more consistent results. The Shimadzu TOC-V/TN analyzer quantifies DOC by purging inorganic carbon from the sample, combusting DOC into carbon dioxide, and measuring the carbon dioxide with an non-dispersive infrared detector. Sample DOC concentrations are determined by comparing the sample results to a set of potassium hydrogen phthalate calibration standards. The DOC range for this instrument is 0.3 - 3500mgL-1. If dissolved carbon values are estimated to be <0.3mgL-1, consider using the Sievers 5310 C TOC analyzer for analysis.

Nitrogen

Additionally analysts interested in monitoring nitrogen in aquatic ecosystems or nitrogen discharging from wastewater treatment plants should consider using the Shimadzu TOC-TN Analyzer. The Shimadzu TOC-V/TN analyzer measures total dissolved nitrogen (TDN) in surface waters, groundwater, drinking water, and wastewater. While this instrument can be used for total nitrogen analysis, the preferred analysis is TDN as filtering prevents clogging in tubes of the instrument and obtains more consistent results. The analyst will not be able to differentiate between different forms of nitrogen with this instrument. The Shimadzu TOC-V/TN analyzer quantifies TDN by purging inorganic nitrogen gas from the sample, combusting dissolved inorganic and organic nitrogen into nitrogen oxide, oxidizing nitrogen oxide with ozone to nitrogen dioxide, and measuring the TDN with an chemiluminescence detector. Sample TDN concentrations are determined by comparing the sample results to a set of potassium nitrate calibration standards. The TDN range for this instrument is from 0.03mgL-1 - 4000mgL-1.
