For the purpose of this study, we define a formal stat lab/center as a group of statisticians that has the following components:

  1. A formal web presence where someone can learn how to request statistical help
  2. An official name of the stat lab
  3. A director (manager, coordinator, etc.) or other point of contact
  4. A (bio)statistical component to its services (for example: a lab focused only on applied math or computer science would not qualify)
  5. An affiliation with a university or four year college in North America, i.e., the stat lab has to be part of a college/university not just a hospital or a government agency
