Zero Waste Action Plan

Project Lead:Town of Nederland Logo
Garrett McDaniel, Sustainability Coordinator

Executive Summary:
Rural communities are struggling with waste diversion due to their population size and geographical location. These communities don’t have the infrastructure in place to effectively divert material from landfills. In speaking with waste haulers, scheduling waste pick up routes in Nederland, Colorado is not cost-effective and would be very expensive for customers. The high price of waste hauling makes it difficult to develop policies which embed the cost of recycling and compost services into residential trash rates. For Nederland to meet its’ Zero Waste goals, the community must come together, think creatively, and identify local solutions.

Key words:
Waste management, landfill diversion, rural town planning, zero waste
