Program Requirements

Students may take up to 12 hours while in the undergraduate program which can later be used toward the master's degree. However, only 6 graduate credit hours may be double counted toward the bachelor's degree and the master's degree. Students must apply to graduate with the bachelor's degree, and apply to continue with the master's degree, early in the semester in which the undergraduate requirements will be completed.

The bachelor's degree will be awarded upon completion of the undergraduate requirements before the student moves to graduate status to continue the master's degree program.

If you are interested in the Applied Mathematics BAM-STAT degree program, please meet with your undergraduate advisor regarding the BAM-STAT program and then contact the APPM BAM-STAT graduate coordinator at am_msam@colorado.edu for more information.

Curriculum

Students in the program should complete all requirements for the Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Statistics and Data Science by the end of their fourth year. Before graduating with their BA, BAM program students must also complete APPM 4440 (Applied Analysis 1) as part of their undergraduate elective statistics and data science coursework. Six credit hours of APPM or STAT graduate courses can be counted towards both the undergraduate degree requirements and towards the requirements for the MS degree. All requirements for both degrees should be completed by the end of the fifth year. If necessary, a sixth year will be allowed. For the MS portion of the BAM program, students must work with a faculty advisor to complete a Culminating Experience Project. In theory, the total minimum number of credit hours required for the BA and MS degree is 144.

For more information, see our course catalog in STAT and APPM.

Advising

Students in the BAM-STAT program must have a Statistics and Data Science or Applied Math faculty advisor with whom they consult to compose a degree plan. This plan will include a list of courses to be taken from the semester following admission to the BAM-STAT program through the end of the graduate program and will ensure that the requirements for both the BA and the MS degrees are satisfied.

Continuation in the Program

The student must maintain an overall GPA of 3.4 in their undergraduate courses and 3.0 in courses numbered 5000 and above. Also, students must complete a minimum of six hours of graduate credit by the end of their senior year. (Included in these credits may be any of the "double-counting" courses described in the Curriculum section above.)

In the final semester of a BAM student’s bachelor’s degree, they will need to complete the following steps to continue with their master's degree:

  1. Apply to graduate with their bachelor's degree.

  2. Submit a master's continuation form.

  3. Submit a BAM supplement form to identify which courses they're double counting and which they're using toward the master's degree.

The last day to complete all three steps is:

  • Oct. 1 for fall graduates

  • Feb. 1 for spring graduates

  • March 1 for summer graduates

After graduating with their bachelor's degree, the student will then finish their master's degree requirements in graduate status.

Regulations

Until a student in this program satisfies all requirements for the BA degree, they will be governed by the rules and regulations applicable to any undergraduate major in the Applied Math department. After a student has graduated with the BA degree and entered graduate status, they will be governed by the rules and regulations of the graduate school and the Applied Math graduate program.

Escape Plan

Students who decide not to continue in the BAM-STAT program must complete the usual BA requirements to obtain that degree. BAM students in undergraduate status who have an expected graduation term change or decided not to continue with the master's degree must submit a BAM program change/discontinuation form.

BAM students in graduate status who no longer want to continue with the master's degree must submit a withdrawal form.
