Since 1976, the BUENO Center for Multicultural Education has been an integral part of the School of Education at the University of Colorado Boulder. Through a comprehensive range of research, training, and service projects, the Center strongly promotes quality education with an emphasis on cultural pluralism. The Center is deeply committed to facilitating equal educational opportunities for cultural and language minority students. The Center also disseminates research findings and related information through various Center publications. Funding for some Center programs is provided through grants and contracts from the U.S. Department of Education.

BUENO’s policy center focuses on bilingual and multicultural educational issues as they relate to policy and in related fields like sociolinguistics, applied linguistics, language learning, innovative strategies of language teaching, language planning and language assessment that are relevant to the development of language and educational policy.

Mission

The BUENO Center promotes and advocates for equitable education for culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) learners, families, and the educators that serve them. We believe that equity and social justice advance education and improve lives and communities. To this end, we conduct relevant and timely research focused on bilingual, multicultural, and special education from early childhood through adulthood. We facilitate comprehensive professional learning from GED to Ph.D. as well as professional development opportunities for practitioners and educational leaders.

Vision

We envision schools and communities where learners of all languages, races, ethnicities, gender identities, and abilities can reach their full potential. We are committed to building pathways, facilitating asset-based discourses, and advancing innovative teaching methods to ensure equitable access to education. We strive to be the most contemporary, informative, and comprehensive research center for CLD learners, their families, communities, and the educators that serve them.
