Spotlight on Research Labs

Hello, and welcome to the laboratories partnering with the CU Boulder Visit Day for Community College Students. Many undergraduates at CU Boulder get involved in the cutting edge research and technology development taking place right here on campus, and we are excited to show you a little bit about what we do in our labs.

Please check out the lab intro videos below, and make sure to ask our undergraduate student researchers on the visit day student panels about their research experience at CU Boulder.

Chuong Lab

BioFrontiers Institute & MCDB
We use computational and experimental approaches to better understand genome evolution and gene regulation in mammals.

Fierer Lab

Ecology & Evolutionary Biology
We explore the distribution and roles of microscopic organisms and the relevance of microbes to the health and function of ecosystems, plants, and animals (including humans).

GEOM Lab

Geological Sciences
In this shared facility, we study how microorganisms grow and evolve in their natural habitats, and what traces of their activity are preserved in nature.

Kralj Lab

BioFrontiers Institute & MCDB
We focus on developing and using optical tools to study biology at unexplored scales with high precision.

Light Microscopy Core

BioFrontiers Institute
In this shared facility, we help researchers from all over campus to advance biological discovery through quantitative light microscopy techniques.

Marchitto Lab

INSTAAR & Geological Sciences
We focus on measuring trace metals in biologically produced minerals to reconstruct past climates.

Organic Geochemistry Lab

INSTAAR & Geological Sciences
In this shared facility, we measure organic molecules (so-called biomarkers) and their isotopic composition to understand past & future climate.

Snell Lab

Geological Sciences
We reconstruct ancient continental environments to answer questions about past climate change and mountain building.

Templeton Lab

Geological Sciences
We focus on understanding the interactions between rocks and living systems on Earth and other planetary bodies.

Vance Lab

Mechanical & Environmental Engineering
We focus on air quality, particularly aerosols (small particle or droplets suspended in air) in the context of ambient and indoor air quality.
