When a faculty member receives an offer from a different Institution, or is expecting an offer, the chair/director may negotiate with the applicable dean to retain them in the college. 

Process 

Faculty member begins conversation with chair of department providing the above criteria for request for retention. Chair of department informs dean of division. With dean of division approval, chair submits the request for retention to department faculty, according to department bylaws.

When the terms of the retention are agreed upon between the chair and dean of division/associate dean/executive director:

  • The dean of college/dean of division/associate dean/executive director must concur with the terms and then obtain official written approval from the provost. Written approval must be sent to CAS Director of Faculty and CAS Budget.
    • NOTE: The retention will not be processed without provost approval.
  • CAS budget office receives retention MOU from the office of the provost.
  • CAS budget office updates MOU with internal funded retention offerings.
  • CAS budget office sends updated MOU to appropriate dean of college/dean of division/associate dean/executive director and office of the provost for final approval.
  • CAS director of faculty creates draft retention agreement.
  • CAS director of faculty routes retention information sheet through DocuSign to chair of department.
  • Upon final approval of retention MOU, CAS director of faculty routes draft retention agreement and MOU to appropriate dean of college/dean of division/associate dean/executive director, OFA and office of the provost for final approval.
  • CAS faculty affairs office routes approved documents for signature.

The final retention offer letter, memorandum of understanding and retention information sheet is copied to the following:

  • Unit
  • Boulder Campus Human Resources Service Center (HRSC@Colorado.edu)
  • College of Arts and Sciences director of budget
