As outlined by the Office of Faculty Affairs website, a leave to pursue scholarly work through a grant or at another institution may be granted to members of the tenure | tenure-track faculty by the Provost through the Office of Faculty Affairs (OFA) on the recommendation of the Department Chair or the Dean. In most cases, the leave will be for one year; it would be unusual for the Provost to grant such a leave beyond two years. Such leaves may be granted to:

  • Permit acceptance of a prestigious grant or fellowship, or
  • Permit acceptance of a temporary appointment at another institution when such appointment would:
    • be in the interest of the University;
    • permit engagement in scholarly activities that are not otherwise practicably available;
    • and, significantly enhance the professional effectiveness of the individual.

Procedures for Requesting Other Leave

  • Once contacted by the faculty member, CAS Faculty Affairs will request the following information:
    • Chair’s name and email address (if rostered to more than one department, information for both chairs is required);
    • Director’s name and email address (if rostered in an institute or museum);
    • Dates of leave request (either an entire semester or specific dates during a semester); and
      • Faculty who are rostered or tenured in multiple units must request leave from both units.
    • A justification for the requested leave
  • The Office of Faculty Affairs (OFA) requires the submission of a Leave of Absence (LOA) request. CAS Faculty Affairs reviews the submitted information, and submits the Leave of Absence form to OFA for completion on your behalf.
    • For Instructors who are appointed below 100%, the request will be submitted by CAS Faculty Affairs via the CAS internal DocuSign power form instead.
    • Faculty on split appointments MUST submit a leave of absence request from all units they are rostered in.
  • A copy of the final, approved request is submitted by the power form to the following:
    • Unit(s)
    • Boulder Campus Human Resources Service Center (HRSC)
    • College of Arts and Sciences Budget Office
